New Arrivals

Squeak, squeak
Little peep
Tiny feathered friend.

Your mouth held wide
In eager wait
For mother to attend.

While watering a few backyard plants, I heard a strange yet delightful noise coming from the barbeque pit.  The sound wasn’t really a chirp, but more like that of a creaky, old wheel in need of WD40. It was very faint at first, but when I lifted the lid to take a peek the volume quickly rose. How sweet it was to discover two baby birds inside.

One opened its mouth in hopes of a morsel, but lay down as soon as it realized I was not there to provide food or warmth. I quickly snapped a picture before the mother’s return. It’s funny how big their beaks are in proportion to their heads, and though they’re not very cute right now I’m still amazed by the beauty of new life.

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” (Matthew 6:26)
